Mr. Rooster Tail ~ BlogRush Update ~ Word Verify ~ Blogger

6”x 6” acrylic mini painting on gallery wrapped canvas

Did I mention we've sold all of our lures? But we can paint more for Christmas gifts. Orders are available through the Canvas by Canvas site or to inquire about placing an order email

For some reason the Google spam robots thought my Nancy Standlee Art Blog was spam and began making me put in word verification at each post and it prevented me from saving a draft. If this happens to you and you've noticed you have to start putting in LETTERS before you can post, but not when you make a comment, then click on the little question mark that appears by the letters and a human will look at your blog, apologize and you'll be back in business. This is the letter I received from the Blogger team and the problem is usually corrected within 24 hours. Thanks, Blogger Team.

Your blog has been reviewed, verified, and
cleared for regular use so that it will no

this has caused.

The Blogger Team

I continue to invite friends to BlogRush even though I've never seen one of my posts appear in the widget; however, I've seen other recognizable blogs several times. This truly is a mystery to me. If you're thinking about joining, read here,, for some frequently asked questions, before joining. To join and give more traffic to the mentioned blogs, click on the tab at the bottom of the widget on the Nancy Standlee Art Blog, CanvasbyCanvas Art Blog, or Artist Food Network. Wait, hold the presses! I just viewed on my site on the BlogRush widget, a blog entry "Card Sharks" from my good friend and fellow CBC painter, Mitchell-Taylor and her blog, Do You Blog Before Breakfast. Congrats, BT, you've conquered the BlogRush widget.

Angel at Rest ~ CBC Mini Paintings ~ by Nancy Standlee

6" x 6" acrylic on canvas
Purchase through Canvas by
Angels are referred to as Watchers, Holy Ones, Host of Heaven, Spirits, Messengers, Guardians and our Champions. They are commonly depicted as having halos and wings and in Christian iconography they are shown as a winged human form and are powerful and are used to execute God's will. This angel is an imaginary angel at rest and as a former librarian, I gave her a book to read but even though she is supposed to be on a "rest break" she still looks down guarding her charges. I used some Pearlescent paint on the wings. Wikipedia has a long article on angels.
Canvas by Canvas has been painting some mini paintings for their upcoming shows and we have done, fish lures and flys, high heels, cupcakes, and now angels. I am one of the 11 members of CBC.

SOLD ~ Pigasus ~ Port Bolivar Vacation ~ by Nancy Standlee

6" x 6"
This little piggy was sold this week but more pigs will be forthcoming through the Canvas by Canvas web site.
He was painted by CBC member Nancy Standlee at the southern part of Texas on the gulf, Port Bolivar, one of the first ports established in Texas. Some of the Canvas by Canvas art group, packed up their bathing suits and painting supplies and headed to this rented vacation home on the gulf side overlooking the beach at Grand Pelican - Sandy Shores. Even before our week's stay was over we were planning a second trip. I had never visited this area and since we went after Labor Day, on September 6 - 11, 2007, we had the beach to ourselves much of the time. We did take lots of photos that we will paint later. Morning coffee on the deck overlooking the ocean with thoughts of a day of painting is indeed a vacation. Throw in a new restaurant search for the evening and maybe a trip to the dollar store for beach chairs makes it complete.

FANCY FLY - by Cindy Yandell

I painted this fanciful fishing fly in honor of the lone peacock that lives up in the trees in my neighborhood. Nothing is more beautiful than the plumage of this unusual resident. The design of this fly quite possibly is just as attractive to the unwary fish who make a grab for it! The painting is included in the series of mini-paintings Canvas by Canvas is preparing for display and for sale at the Front Street Festival in Arlington, TX, as well as at Holiday Magic in early December. The price of this 6"x 6" acrylic painting done on gallery-wrapped canvas is $40.00. Five artists from Canvas by Canvas were able to get away for a few days to the sunny beaches of Galveston, Texas where we worked on some of our mini paintings in preparation for 2 upcoming shows: Front Street Festival in Arlington, Texas on September 29 and Holiday Magic the first weekend in December. We have lots of great gift ideas for under $50: For the hard to please lady in your life: high heeled shoes. For that special celebration: cupcakes. And for gentlemen: fishing lures and flies. We've also started little piglets and roosters/chickens to delight everyone. I hope you enjoy some of our photos from Galveston and visit our website to see our mini paintings. More will be added in the coming weeks so check back often.

Green Highlander (Hairwing) Fishing Fly ~ by Nancy Standlee

6" x 6"
This acrylic canvas can be purchased at
Canvas by Canvas.
The Green Highlander is one of the classic fly patterns that is still going strong in all parts of the "salar-world" (Atlantic salmon). Canvas by Canvas may need to have a fishing road trip now that SOME of us are learning there is a difference in flies and lures. Next week some of the group are taking a road trip to Galveston so we may come back with photos to paint of fishermen to go along with the minis. Definitely stay tuned. More infomation on fly fishing can be found at Wikipedia.

Tiny Crazy Crawler

Next in the Canvas by Canvas fishing lure series is an antique Tiny Crazy Crawler made by Heddon. I love fishing with this little guy, he makes a splish splash sound as he swims across the top of the water, what fish could resist? Don't resist this purchase for $40.00, paypal available. More lures and flys on the way, keep checking in and check out our Artist food blog for great ways to fix those fish when you catch them. B.G. Hackney

WATER VIBE by Mitchell-Taylor

6" x 6"
Acrylic on Gallery Wrapped Canvas

This green and red Water Vibe fishing lure looks like it's swimming and has probably caught a fish or two in its time. With the holidays in only 4 short months a lot of resourceful people are doing their shopping early. Canvas by Canvas will be selling these colorful paintings in their booth at the Front Street Festival in Arlington, Texas on September 29, 2007. For more information visit the website of the Arlington Historical Society. Affordable and compact, these paintings will make the ideal gift for the man who has everything. They can be hung by themselves or placed into one of our custom-made wooden frames.

Heddon Musky Night ~ Radiant Charmer Lure ~ by Nancy Standlee

6" x 6"
For purchases go to Canvas by Canvas.
This is an antique fishing lure and I've discovered these can sell for thousands of dollars. When we began this project, I was fishing fly and lure information deficient. I had no idea what paraphernalia a fishing enthusiast might use since my last fishing experience involved a cork and a cane pole or maybe a small red and white plastic bobble cork. Now I think I can tell the difference between a fly and a lure but that is about all with the exception these are fun to paint. I hope they will be fun to purchase.
More information on fishing lures can be found at Wikepedia.

Jim Dandy Fishing Lure by Margie Whittington

This is another addition to our new mini paintings of fishing lures and flies. This one is called a Jim Dandy. I painted it to look old and cracked. Maybe this lure has caught a lot of fish in its lifetime. If you or someone in your family enjoys fishing and collecting fishing items, these 6 X 6 mini paintings would make great gifts. There are custom frames available for one, two or as many as you want. Don't miss our booth at The Front Street Art Show and Sale in Arlington and we will also have a booth at Holiday Magic this coming November. Stayed tuned for more fishing fun!!!!!

FLYING RED ANT by Pat Salazar

If you are a fly fisherman, you know that you need to match the hatch when stream fishing. If there are red ants flying around, this particular fly which I have painted and named Freddie, will be your best friend. It is a Flying Red Ant. One of our CbC members, Margie, who has just returned from Cuchara, New Mexico, used this fly to catch a great number of fish. I hope to have the privilege of not only fishing with this one, but taking more lessons from my guide, Andy Kim, and using other flies that he has tied for me and my favorite fisherman, Frank! Check out our web page at for details about our paintings of flies, lures along with other interesting R3 minis!

I have had several painting assignments for Canvas by Canvas to complete before we leave on a trip as we have several important shows coming up in the near future. One of the exciting things that we will be participating in is Holiday Magic. Every year since 1982, more than 10,000 North Texans flock to Holiday Magic, a holiday gift market with the unique gifts from more than 100 exclusive vendors and attend the highly anticipated Ladies Style Show and Luncheon. This year Holiday Magic also includes a Tween Style Show and Children’s Party. It is sponsored by the Junior League of Arlington. Check out their web site at If you happen to be in the area, be sure to join us for the fun and great shopping! We will be showing many of our paintings for sale there, among which will be our new whimsical minis which consist of lures and flies for the ladies and gentlemen in your family who enjoy the wonderful sport of fishing. To be perfectly honest, I was NOT looking forward to painting these funny little creatures, but once I got into it, I became very excited and they actually started to take on a personality all their own! I have named this one "Casper" as the lure is called a Punkinhead Spook. I think that Casper has a personality all his own, in fact I find him to be very "alluring" ;-) Casper makes great bait for shad if that is your fish of choice. These little jewels are each 6x6 on gallery wrapped canvas and are the perfect original gift for that outdoor person in your life. Check out our web site at for more details. I had such fun painting him and I hope that you enjoy seeing our work and hopefully buying one or two. Can't wait to paint more of them.

We are starting a new series of Mini paintings to help get everyone in the mood for Christmas gifts and giving something special and original to those people in your lives who are important to you. This design for this particular painting originated from a Bulto that I have in my Southwest Folk Art collection. The name Bulto (Traditional) is a statue of Christ, a saint or the Blessed Virgin carved from cottonwood root, covered with gesso and painted. Sometimes the statue is clothed. Contemporary bultos can be found in bronze and other media, but the traditional ones are always hand carved and painted from local wood. They are very popular at Spanish Market in Santa Fe which is held in late July each year. Local artisans sell their "wares" if you will, and you can see all the colorful hand carved pieces as you stroll around the Plaza. Our new series consists of Angels and they would make wonderful stocking stuffers for that special someone. Each one is on a 6x6 gallery wrapped canvas and is hand painted by a different artist in the group. They are large enough to make a great impression and yet small enough to put on a free standing easel.

You can also start a collection of these miniatures and put them in one of our hand crafted custom made frames. We will also have some "surprise" paintings coming soon that will be terrific gifts for the man of your dreams. To get more information on all of our Minis, please visit our web page at Christmas is just around the corner and this is a very easy way to begin your shopping and avoid the crowds!

LA DOLCE VITA by Mitchell-Taylor

La Dolce Vita - Sassy Shoe by Elizabeth Mitchell-Taylor
6" x 6" Acrylic on Canvas
HERE for info

I'd like to share with you a painting I did for our mini series on shoes. There are dizzying array of shoe choices on websites such as Zappos. But why not purchase a pair or two of designer shoes from Canvas by Canvas to display in the powder room or bedroom of your home? Your feet will love you and you'll get a real "kick" out of seeing these elegant orange and gold brocade Dolce and Gabana shoes every day. These shoes are painted on gallery wrapped canvas and can be hung individually, or can be arranged in one of our custom made frames.
One of the joys of being a Canvas by Canvas painter is that, feeding off each other's enthusiasm, we all become more productive and better painters. In a recent newsletter by Robert Genn, the Painter's Keys, he talks about the benefits of a buddy system of painting and mentions these pointers for getting along.
  1. Don't comment unless asked.
  2. Give the gift of joyous approval.
  3. Accept all comers for what they wish to become.
  4. Understand and grant other styles and approaches.
  5. Feature others rather than yourself.
  6. Bask in the sunshine of others' success.
  7. Treasure the miracle of friendship.

These are great tips for ANY social endeavor and with 11 members, Canvas by Canvas thinks they are especially valuable as we pursue our collaborative painting experiment.

Mother Hubbard Never Had a Shoe Like This

Poor Mother Hubbard had to wear all those old clunky shoes because she had so many children. You can go to Canvas by Canvas and buy this cool shoe painting as a reminder of how lucky you are not to have to keep your children in your shoes!!! It is on sale for $40 including shipping.

My husband and I just got back from a Baltic Cruise on the Holland America Line "Veendam",. It was a wonderful trip that started and ended in Copenhagen, Denmark. We were walking one day near the popular Nyhavn Canal in Copenhagen and passed a shoe store. This shoe was sitting in the window and I just had to photograph and paint it...hope you like it...Maryann Stephens

Razzle Dazzle by Connie Michael

This elegant shoe is just what you need for a celebration.

Available for a mere $40, this shoe will get you the attention you're looking for. Wrap it up and give it as a gift to your best friend, mother, sister or daughter. Stand back and enjoy the smile. There's nothing like a surprise!

Visit our Canvas by Canvas website for a larger selection of shoes ... and more!

Hotsy Dotsy by Elaine Schneider

This cute red slipper is part of our Canvas by Canvas mini-series. This $280 shoe is 6x6 acrylic, painted on gallery wrapped canvas and is available for a short while at the bargain price of $40. You'd better hurry while we still have it in your size! For purchasing information go to Canvas by Canvas.

PARTY ANIMAL by Pat Salazar

The first pair of shoes that I painted when I was in Santa Fe was entitled "Party Pumps", so what better name for this new little panting than "Party Animal". Of course, no party is complete without a glass or two of a good Sauvignon Blanc to go along with a great looking pair of shoes and that wonderful little black dress to set the mood for a fun evening.
I saw these particular shoes in a window in Santa Fe and there was a very high dollar price tag on them. I decided that it would be a much better investment to paint them rather than wear them. That way I could share them with others in a creative way.
The heels were almost as high as the price tag was and I was certain that I wouldn't be able to walk in them. I'd probably be turning my ankle rather than people's heads if I showed up at a party with them on my feet!
This little shoe is acrylic on a 6x6 gallery wrapped canvas. It is priced at $40. We are suggesting that you purchase several of our little gems that are in our mini series, either one at a time or several together and put them in one of our custom made frames. You can check these frames out on our web page. By doing this, you can build your own one of a kind original painting by adding another small painting as gift for a special occasion such as a birthday, anniversary ... it's rather like an add a pearl necklace and a great way to start an art collection. Oh ... and don't forget Christmas when you need to get something for that someone special. It will be here sooner than you think! Be sure and keep us in mind when you need something original for that special person in your life. Check out our web page at as we have updates on a regular basis.

This will be my first entry in the Canvas by Canvas blog since we've been painting cupcakes. I have spent the entire morning working on this little painting that I started last night. It's wonderful to be able to get up early, enjoy some delicious flavored coffee, listen to the world wake up as our local Mockingbird chirps good morning to everyone just outside of our kitchen door, and paint until you finally accomplish what consider to be a "fun" painting. I found out that whipped cream is almost as hard to paint as it is for your system to digest it.(Maybe I'll paint Cool Whip next time ;-) Be sure and check out our web page at and see what else is there.
All of our little gems in our mini series are 0n 6x6 gallery wrapped canvases and can be framed alone or as a group. They are all priced at $40 each. I think they would look wonderful in either a kitchen or a child's room. We are all, after all, children at heart, and who doesn't like cupcakes! Since they're so small and not nearly as filling as a piece of cake, I'm sure that most of the calories have been removed. In fact, there are NO calories in our paintings. Bon Appetite!

Cupcake Celebrities ~ I'm Coconuts About You ~ by Elaine Schneider

6" x 6" Acrylic on gallery wrapped canvas

Elaine Schneider from Canvas by Canvas painted this Cupcake Celebrity to add to our birthday celebration Mini Series. If you'd like to purchase this painting or a combination of our Mix and Match series click HERE.

Canvas by Canvas LLC - Our First Birthday

A Birthday Celebration Cupcake ~ A TASTE OF SUNSHINE ~ by Barbara Hackney
Canvas by Canvas LLC is a group of eleven close friends and fellow Texans who paint collaboratively together. That is, all of our fine art pieces contain six to twelve canvases painted in acrylics, each created by a different artist. Simply put, we cut up our own photos into squares and blindly draw for the square we get to paint. The proposed subject matter is always voted upon as is the title of the piece, the frame is built by a carpenter husband, and the final assemblage usually calls for a group celebration; however, sometimes the celebration is delayed as an artist might tweak a bit to make her canvas integrate with the others as well as it can.

People who see our work for the first time usually ask "How do you all paint so much alike that it’s hard to tell one artist’s work from another’s?" The answer is... we don’t know! I suppose the fact that we’ve been painting together for years has to have an effect on our personal styles. But I think it’s more than that. This past year being a member of Canvas by Canvas (the corporation) is like suddenly having 10 new best friends. We are eager to share with one another every single thing in our lives, and that includes tips, techniques, photos, ideas, and advice. It is a delight to take a new workshop and come back home to "teach" the other 10 members what we learned!

It does take a lot of constant communication, however, to keep up with each other, as some are far more energetic--or shall I say--gung-ho than others. But here we are... middle-aged and more, having the time of our lives. College kids in a dormitory couldn’t have more fun than we do when we go off on painting retreats together. More often than that, though, are the bi and tri-weekly "events" we attend together, whether it’s a painting day at the local gallery where we can all "fit" in the studio with our individual tonnage of art supplies, or a new movie after lunch, or scouting around on photo shoots to get ideas for our paintings.

During the past 12 months, CBC artists have produced some 35 large paintings and the group has been highlighted in several publications including a full-page ad for Dick Blick in Artist’s Magazine. All four paintings entered in the Dallas PCPC Arts Festival juried show were accepted for display, one winning a First Place ribbon and cash prize. Creative Catalyst Productions awarded Canvas by Canvas a National Merit Award in the summer of 2006 for one of their pieces, and in May of 2007 another painting won the Juror’s Choice Award. A brand new television show called "The Art of Living" is featuring the artists in a TV segment to be broadcast worldwide in high definition during the fall of this year.

No wonder we’re so happy! Is something wrong with this picture? We just don’t see what it could be.

Happy Birthday to us!
