PIGEONS FROM THE PARKS - by Elizabeth Mitchell Taylor

The Parks Mall in Arlington is getting a major re-do. There were many small pigeon statues throughout the mall, up in the rafters and high beams. These were donated, and after being redecorated by area artists, the newly beautified pigeons will be auctioned off in November to benefit River Legacy Park. Stay tuned for further details on how YOU can get one of them!

In another collaborative effort, each Canvas by Canvas artist has selected a pigeon to repurpose - "Golden Girl " is the contribution of artist Elizabeth Mitchell Taylor - This pretty gold pigeon looks like she has laid a giant goose egg. Nestled in soft turquoise feathers on a golden platter, the egg may just hatch soon!

This was a new experience collaging a pigeon. One time I collaged my 4 year old sons broken leg cast with him in it after he had scooted around the floor and just worn it off. I put him on the kitchen table and got out paper and glue and patched it back together. I had a similar experience with this little recycled guy. He came to me with a detached foot and I had to perform several operations to attach it and this is why one ankle is slightly larger than the other. Now to the why I'm buried knee deep in pigeon collage instead of putting up art supplies from weeks of workshop travel.  I'd just finished up a 4 day Carol Nelson workshop in Granbury (posts are in the works,) and on Saturday I gave a one day collage workshop in Dallas at the Dutch Art Gallery, and did a blue high heel as my demo. See previous post HERE and Sunday I met with some of my Canvas by Canvas peeps to paint pigeons. It seems the Parks Mall was donating the pigeons to River Legacy Park for an auction/fundraiser in the fall, November 9, 2012, and my friend, Maryann, got us 5 to decorate. Since my boxes of blue papers were nearby from the Saturday workshop I chose to have a blue pigeon and I'd saved the ad from my favorite recent movie, Midnight in Paris, and used some of those papers.
Foot Repair:
River Legacy wanted them on a base and my pigeon was disabled. I went to my favorite Home Depot, searched around in their left over lumber bin and had an end wood piece cut off, all for .51 cents. I attached the feet with Gorilla Glue, then as an added precaution, added heavy gel medium on top and collaged pieces to cover those little feet. Mr. Pigeon was not balanced as he was missing a long toe and I think I probably should have added a little dowel in the front breast area for him to rest on or hang a sign around his neck "carry me by my base". Anyway, he was a learning experience and he was heavily textured to begin with and I used liquid medium to attach the torn papers because I didn't have the gel with me on Sunday but it worked by applying it liberally but I would recommend the gel when you collage a pigeon.

Liz will hold a figure workshop this Saturday and I recommend it and have taken her figure workshop in Houston but she also does pigeons which I dearly love. I covet Liz Hill's pigeons and do wish I'd done them first. I have a beloved Baptist Hymnal that was weeded when my De Leon church got new books and I could collage those precious pages. I think I've already torn out "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and that's bad because it was the only song I could play on the piano. My collage class on Saturday kept asking is it o.k. to mix this or add this to my collage.. it's always YES.. look at Liz's work as she mixes watercolor, acrylic, charcoal, collage.. even her blog is called "Irreverent Art".  But I'm calling my future Liz Hill knock off pigeon collage, a dove collage because I have more emotional connections to doves than pigeons but that is another post.

Here is one of Liz's wonderful bird paintings:
